First, are you sure you’re supposed to bring a gift? Engagement parties are not gift giving occasions, and that’s why there can be awkwardness, because the people who know this don’t bring gifts. So I’d make sure if you haven’t. And then the other issue is wouldn’t you be making the basket for both of them?
Anyway, gift baskets are fun, and just go with things they like. You can do a movie night with a gift card to get DVDs, popcorn, theater candy, etc. Or you can put together an Italian dinner basket, with some red wine, nice pasta and bottled sauce, a candle, etc.

You can give them a gift for their engagement, by sending it to their home.
Try a movie night themed basket for her and her new hubby…
I always like to do the “These are a Few of Your Favorite Things,” basket for birthdays, mothers day, and it might work in this case. Its nice, because it shows them you were listening and remembered what their favorite things are…

As a previous poster responded, Engagement parties are not gift giving occasions. If you have your heart set on giving them a gift, do so before or after the party.
One of the best gifts I was given was a bridal emergency kit. A good friend of mine filled a plastic toolbox with all sorts of goodies: stationary, pens, safety pins, bobby pins, static cling remover, chalk, lotion, antacids, aspirin and a myriad of other things one might need while trying on gowns to the wedding day itself. I kept that toolkit in my car and used it all the time! After my wedding I gave it to my cousin who used it during her wedding planning. My cousin gave it to her sister who has also passed it down to another family member.
